PROJECT JOURNEY
January:
At the beginning of the semester, as we learned more about our project and the topic of the global waste crisis and marine debris, It was clear to me what I wanted to do for the project. I was president of our school’s SCUBA team, and was in the process of getting certified. I was excited about creating a documentary about the ocean, capturing the beauty of it as well as the less-than-beautiful parts of it, impacted by humans and our waste. I partnered up with my classmate Caroline Egler, who is also SCUBA certified. We share a common love for the ocean and were excited to make a film together.
Inthe early stages, we talked about the kinds of visits we wanted to take to the ocean, as well as exploring funding possibilities to hire a divemaster/instructor as well as to rent the gear for multiple dives. We talked with Blue Dot, an organization at HTH who sometimes fund student projects , and they supported our ideas.
February:
Caroline and I spoke with a third team member, Zoey Roman Baumeister, and discussed collaborating on our documentary, as she also is an ocean-lover and wanted to film freediving and surfing, which felt like a match.
We did a lot of storyboarding that month, exploring what the styles of editing and shots we would hope tons getting. We went on our first video project field trip on February 26th, to La Jolla Cove, which is part of a protected marine preserve. We traveled there with two more classmates, and the focus was on snorkeling. It was a sunny day, and the surf was pretty mellow, so we got some great footage, especially of Garibaldi fish and sea grasses near a rocky edge.
March:
I started adjusting to being more on the videographer role, rather than being IN the water. I started working more on getting interesting shots of them being in the water, approaching the water, etc. This is when I started using my drone, and being interested in the drone perspective shots as part of the film.

APRIL:
One of our field trips was a trip to La Jolla cove and OB this trip was meant for snorkeling and flying the drone and at the cove there was to many things that could affect the drone so we didn’t end up flying it there. So i took so timelapse and then we went to OB and then The crew went in the water and they were boogie boarded, I was flying the drone and got some sick shots
Also April 22nd ( Earth day) As a team we went to earth fair and we had a booth, this experience was amazing because we gotta talk to cool people and got to explain our project to lots of people. I was at earth fair all day and by the end of the day I had to starting sentences down and talking to people was like a piece of cake by the end of the day. Also I had a lot of teachers want my documentary and also a couple teachers i talked to for a while and got good advice and feedback from.
MAY
May was a busy month for my group and mostly me, we did a couple field trips and with every field trip came with me shooting going thru videos and editing. We had a drive day at La Jolla for this trip we partnered with kale Palmer she is a dive instructor which is the highest certification you can get when diving. So we went to the cove and caroline was going to go diving but kalle called the drive ( calling a dive is when the dive mater or instructor says the conditions aren’t right or something is wrong and the dive gets cancelled) Also Zoe, Kalle,Caroline and lisa decided to just go snorkeling. The waves started to pick up and the visibility wasn't the best to they ended up getting out earlier than expected and we cleaned up the gear and went to the dive shop to bring everything back.
Camping Trip
Also what made May a busy month we went on a team camping trip, This trip wasn’t just because we wanted to go camping we wanted to experience the outdoors and to open our eyes to what we need to protect. The camping site was about a mile away from the beach so with that it was super cool for my group because our whole project was about the beach and oceans so this gave us an opportunity to go to the beach and get videos and have aaron surf. We needed up getting really dope footage and lots of cool B-roll. Also when we were at the camping site i got to fly the drone and get super cool shots of the sunset.
RESEARCH REFLECTION
COLLABORATION
List two areas of strength (personalities, creativity, love for the ocean), and two areas of challenge (communication/split part of the team, navigating our ideas).
Some Strengths we had as a group we all have big ideas and strong personalities and this was a good thing because we all had the best ideas for our videos and we all know how it was to have people in our group not do work or not do what they were supperot to be doing. So we all had good and bad experiences with groups so we as a group was a good thing.
Some challenges we had was being in different classes with zoe also our communication wasn’t the best which we are working on and making sure we are talking and have a clear understanding.
IMPACT
My hope is that someone will watch my documentary and have a open mind on what's happening in the ocean.
I have changed my habits a lot with this project i pack my own lunch everyday and also i stopped using straws
I talked and discussions with my dad and other friends related to my project and some people were very shocked and impressed about the things I was telling them.

- La Jolla Cove February Snorkeling Excursion
- Nell Kerndt we talked to her over skype and got to watch her video about the ocean
- Isa Rosso we talked with her about her life and experience and it was super cool conversion.
- Kalle Palmer she gave me good advice about the ocean and ideas about the ocean nad my video
